Alabama Women

THE REPORT
The report contains the results of a two-year study of the condition of women in Alabama, our positions in leadership, and the research on how women contribute to leadership. We conclude with a call to action: simple steps that all women can take to improve the quality of life for all our citizens.

THE DATA
The findings of the report demonstrate that Alabama women trail the nation in both quality of life indicators and in participation in leadership?in government and in business. For example, the report finds: Alabama has the lowest percentage of women in the state legislature of any state in the union. Alabama women earn 63 cents for every dollar an Alabama man earns, which means we have now achieved the earning power the average woman had nationally in 1979. Alabama women rank 46th in life expectancy. However, we top the charts in heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and chlamydia-all largely preventable illnesses.

HOW WOMEN LEAD
A clear statement of the issues is only the beginning. Women in Alabama are as capable and as talented as women across the United States. Therefore, it is important to ask what impact a coherent female voice can have on leadership. Research confirms that women add some valuable attributes to leadership. While women differ widely in our views, we tend to:
be more concerned and knowledgeable about issues related to our traditional roles as caregivers such as education, healthcare and child welfare. These are precisely the issues that need most attention in Alabama.
lead in an inclusive manner, emphasizing teamwork, and involving others.
be thorough and make decisions based on principle. have excellent communication skills.
